We got the opportunity to write a spotlight article for Trends in Immunology on the elegant study by Fonesca et al published in Nature Immunology. T resident memory (Trm) cells provide a first line of defense in non-lymphoid tissue. This new study reveals that CD8+ Trm cells can exit the tissue and give rise to circulating effector and memory T cells, but remain predisposed to migrate back into their tissue of origin.
